PHILADELPHIA - Society Hill Sheraton
The project was the first hotel project that Miller worked on, this as Project Architect in the New York offices of Welton Becket. A local Philadelphia developer had acquired a prime piece of property in the historic Society Hill district, near the xxx River waterfront. Nestled in the Old City district of Philadelphia at One Dock Street, the hotel is in the midst of some of the nation's most renowned historical attractions, including The National Constitution Center and Penn's Landing.
Sheraton was hired as the Hotel Management company. Welton Becket headed up a team of design consultants, including Trisha Wilson Associates, a lead hotel interior designer at the time.
The challenges to the project were fitting in the program agreed between Owner and Operator, within an odd, almost triangular shaped site, with a strict height limit, and other more subjective design constraints imposed within the historic neighborhood by local authorities. David Beer, the company’s lead hotel designer at the time, developed a scheme, of what appeared to be a connected set of individual townhouse-scaled blocks of varying brick patterns. The intent was to create a modern, functional 4-star hotel that took inspiration from colonial era brick residential architecture of the neighborhood.

Guests are invited to relax in the hotel's indoor, heated swimming pool, break a sweat in the Sheraton Fitness room or get some extra work done in The Link@Sheraton, a full-service, 24/7 business center. The hotel also provides 20,000 square feet of versatile meeting and event space, including the 7,800 square-foot Society Hill Ballroom capable of hosting up to 900 guests. Guests may indulge on contemporary dining with a dash of ambiance and a nod to the historical importance of the surroundings at Taste, the hotel's on-site restaurant.
Hotel guests can take a short stroll down cobblestone streets to Philadelphia's most renowned restaurants and cultural attractions, while also being just blocks from the city's financial district and City Hall. With nearly 370 rooms, more than 20,000 sq. ft. of function space and a textbook blend of amenities, the Sheraton Society Hill is the perfect location for all downtown Philadelphia travel occasions.
